Hi, I’m Sonya. Thanks for taking the time to read my stories of faith and family.

I started this Boy Mom blog a few years ago when we were in the process of adopting teenagers. I figured being the mom of five boys would require some internal processing, and I do that best through writing. An instructor at a writer’s conference said, “We don’t write what we know. We write until we know.” Which is exactly how it is for me. More often than not, God gives me clarity as I’m telling the story.

If you’ve been reading for a while, you’ve met my five boys, and my husband, Kyle. We’re in the “revolving door” season of life, which means you never know who’s going to need a bed. Grant and Kiana have their own bed in their own home in Des Moines, Iowa, where he’s is a worship pastor and she’s a photographer. Maisy RaeThey are also parents to MY GRANDDAUGHTER!! Little Maisy Rae came out of the womb with an entire collection of hair bows, which is something this family has never experienced, and every last one of us is totally enamored.

Luke and Ali were married on New Year’s Eve 2018. They are living for now in Colorado Springs, where Ali grew up. (We gave them a bed as a wedding gift, but last I heard it was still in the box, waiting for a more permanent destination.) Our newlyweds are outdoorsy adventurers, and I want to grow up to be like them. Luke is my thinking son, and more often than not the FAITH part of this blog is somehow inspired by our mom and son conversations.

Nils is next. He is built like me, but he thinks like his dad, hopefully an okay combination. Nils is almost always smiling, and he truly loves his mom. He’s a college student with a very difficult sounding major, basically math – something we predicted for him when the boy was a toddler. Nils and his older brothers love to play music together, especially worship music, which is my absolute FAVORITE.

Felipe and Jimmy are my Colombian sons, and they’re really the reason I started blogging. I needed a way to reflect and remember all the amazing God-stories we’ve been living these past few years. God is good, and He is faithful has become my mantra as I’ve lived this miracle of a Boy Mom life. God knew exactly what He was doing when He added some Colombian spice to my Minnesota nice, and I wouldn’t trade it.

Felipe is our budding scientist, who teaches us how to see the world through an artist’s eye. He’s living at home while attending college, and he also works with me at church part time.

“Baby Jimmy” is the one true extrovert of the Anderson family, and he makes sure our home is filled with friends. Jimmy is a senior in high school, and he is planning to play soccer at a small Christian college next year.

Sooner than later our nest might possibly be empty, and truth-be-told, we’re okay with that. Kyle has been my BFF for a lot of years, and we get kind of excited thinking about someday being just the two of us. (And maybe Maple, our goldendoodle.) Besides being a wife and mom I work on staff at Constance Free Church as the Family Resource Coordinator. The ministry I oversee encourages families to love Jesus and love each other, which is really the goal of this whole Boy Mom thing, and it’s my prayer for you, too.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,
may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people,
to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,
and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—
that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:17-19

  1. What a blessing to read! I am so grateful and glad to be part of your family too! I love you and love that we all love Jesus too! Can’t wait to have 2 more boys in the family and pray that they will grow to love Jesus more and more! Jesus, please bring them to us soon!

  5. Hi – I like the name of your blog, as I am also a boymom, although mine are much older than yours. The interesting thing about being a Mom is that you never stop being one. It has been a privilege to pray for your family as you wait to adopt your two precious boys from Columbia, and I will pray hard that you get your official referral this week. God’s timing is always right, and we can trust that.
